August in Florida does not ask politely. The afternoons are heavy, the storms roll in on schedule, and the smart move is to plan your fun for the evening or somewhere with air conditioning. Downtown New Port Richey has both covered. This month brings local celebrities behind the bar, a week of prix fixe dinners, three nights of tribute rock and a kids’ musical at the theatre, all within a short stroll of The Central on Orange Lake.

On Thursday, Aug. 6, familiar faces trade their day jobs for a bar towel. New Port Richey Main Street puts local personalities behind the bar at six Downtown spots, including Mayor Chopper Davis at Cotee River Brewing, plus pairs at Zen Kitchen and Bar, Steamworks Pub, Sasha’s on the Park at The Hacienda, The Kangaroo and Sullivan’s Boulevard. As Main Street’s executive director Nathan Ward put it, “The celebrity bartenders are not professional bartenders,” so a staff bartender handles the tricky cocktails. Every cash tip goes to Main Street’s work on murals, promotion and keeping Downtown thriving.

Saturday morning starts with Thrive on the Square, Main Street’s free monthly wellness series. Sunday brings two reasons to stay close to home: Sunshine Sessions, the City of New Port Richey‘s free, all-ages music gathering in Cavalaire Square, followed by Summer in the City, an afternoon of shopping and dining built to send a little summer business to Downtown’s shops and restaurants.

New Port Richey’s own restaurant week, Downtown Dine Out, runs Aug. 16 to 22. Participating restaurants offer multi-course prix fixe menus, usually a starter, entrée and dessert, and every meal supports a locally owned kitchen. It is the perfect week to try the place you keep walking past.

Richey Suncoast Theatre keeps its air conditioning and its stage busy all month. An all-kid local cast opens it with Disney’s Frozen JR. from Aug. 6 to 8. Then the tribute acts take over: Woodstock 69 with two shows on Aug. 15, The Seger Experience on Aug. 22, and Completely Unchained, a Van Halen tribute, on Aug. 28.

The month closes on Friday, Aug. 28, when Grand Boulevard, Nebraska Avenue and Main Street close to cars for the Fourth Friday Block Party and Bazaar, the monthly evening market of local artisans, makers, bakers and small businesses. Catch the market, then walk to the theatre for the late show.

Sunday, Aug. 16 through Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026, at participating Downtown New Port Richey restaurants.

Friday, Aug. 28, from 6 to 10 PM in Downtown New Port Richey.

A New Port Richey Main Street fundraiser on Thursday, Aug. 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, where local personalities tend bar at Downtown restaurants and the cash tips support Main Street.

Disney’s Frozen JR. (Aug. 6 to 8), Woodstock 69 (Aug. 15), The Seger Experience (Aug. 22) and Completely Unchained (Aug. 28).

August is easier when the best nights out are close to home, and the lakeside fire pit is waiting when you get back.
